On Monday, February 27th at 7pm, Berlin-based artist Stefan Heyne will present a talk with artist Farrah Karapetian on “The New German Abstraction,” as well as lead a tour of his exhibition, SUPER VISION.  

SUPER VISION: The New German Abstraction is the first US solo exhibition of photographs by Stefan Heyne. German photography since the 1970s is influenced by the “New Objectivity” of the Dusseldorf School and its protagonists Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth. Stefan Heyne’s “New German Abstraction” opposes this clarity and is non-representational. His photo-based images set aside visual clarity for the radical abstraction of the “indefinite.” The large-scale color “SEAT” series use of high-definition reproductions of perhaps one of the purest motifs of all: the cloudless sky.

STEFAN HEYNE (Ger. b. 1965) received his MA in stage design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißenseehas, Berlin (1993). He began exhibiting photographs in 2004. Heyne has received three museum solo exhibitions in Germany:  NAKED LIGHT: Die Belichtung des Unendlichen (Exposing Infinity), Stadische Galerie Dresden (2014), Speak to Me: Fotografien, Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus (2012), and Gegendarstellung, Stadtmuseum Gross-Gerau (2010), each with a catalogue.  He was included in The Autonomous Picture: Five Concepts of Contemporary Photography (Das autonome Bild: Fünf Konzepte aktueller Fotografie, Kunstmuseum Bochum (2016) and Light Painted Abstractions, Kaune Contemporary, Cologne (2016).  His photographs are in the permanent collections of DKW (Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus), Cottbus; and Kunstsammlungen und Museen Augsburg, both in Germany.  The artist lives and works in Berlin. 

FARRAH KARAPETIAN (USA, b. 1978 is an artist who works with camera-less photography in a sculptural and increasingly relational field.  She has had multiple solo exhibitions and is represented by Von Lintel Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) and Danziger Gallery (New York, NY.)  Upcoming exhibitions include A Matter of Memory, George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY (2016); The Surface of Things, Houston Center for Photography; and About Time: Photography in a Moment of Change, SFMOMA, San Francisco, CA (2016.)  She was a MacDowell Fellow (2010) and an artist-in-residence at the Wende Museum, Culver City, CA (2009). Ms. Karapetian earned a Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for her blog Housing Projects (2012). She received her BA from Yale University (2000) and her MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (2008). Ms. Karapetian lives and works in Los Angeles.
