An Artist's Talk and Panel Discussion with Ray Anthony Barrett, Zackary Drucker, Luke Gilford, Masood Kamandy, Mie Hørlyck Mogensen, Max Rain, and Kim Schoen

DRFA hosts a panel discussion with 7 California artists as part of the ongoing public program for "Unsparing Quality" (curated by Farrah Karapetian).

Diane Rosenstein Fine Art is pleased to announce an artist's talk and panel discussion with seven California artists as part of the ongoing public program for Unsparing Quality (curated by Farrah Karapetian), on view through March 29, 2014.  This exhibition poses the question: where do Surrealist impulses manifest in contemporary practice? 
 
The artists participating on the panel discussion are Ray Anthony Barrett, Zackary Drucker, Luke Gilford, Masood Kamandy, Mie Hørlyck Mogensen, Max Rain, and Kim Schoen.

About the Artists:

Ray Anthony Barrett (USA, b. 1980) received his BA from the University of Missouri, Columbia (2003) and his MFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland, Oregon (2011). Barrett's poetic drawings acknowledge the complicated relationship between language and image by deconstructing the vernacular used to define hip-hop culture. He has shown internationally in the Dakar Biennial, Dakar, Senegal (2010). Mr. Barrett lives and works in Los Angeles. 

Zackary Drucker (USA, b. 1983) uses photographs, videos, and performance to break down the way individuals think about gender, sexuality, and seeing. Drucker often works in collaboration and recently worked with Luke Gilford for a series of photographs in "Unsparing Quality". Currently Zackary Drucker and Rhys Ernst are showing their photographic diary Relationship in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Recent exhibitions include Made in L.A. 2012 (with Rhys Ernst), The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA and At least you know: you exist (with Flawless Sabrina), MoMA PS1, New York, NY (2012).  Drucker is the recipient of the "Emerging Artist" grant from 2009 CCF/Fellowship for the Visual Arts in Los Angeles. The artist received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY (2005) and her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA (2007). Zackary Drucker lives and works in Los Angeles.


Luke Gilford (USA, b. 1986) is a photographer, filmmaker, collagist and installation artist. His work was exhibited in Performa 09, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2009); PRUNE - Abstracting Reality (guest curated by Kathy Ryan), in association with Foam, Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, Netherlands (2009); Continuity of Chaos, Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, Netherlands (2011); and Fake (curated by FAKE Magazine), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (2008-2009). He has just written & directed OUTSIDE IN, a short film for Proenza Schouler, starring Kirsty Hume (Dazed & Confused, 2014). Gilford's recent film The Future of Flesh (in collaboration with Prada and Jane Fonda, 2013) premiered on The New York Times. His documentary, Holi (2011), (commissioned by The New York Times Magazine) was broadcast on Channel 4 (UK) and Dazed Digital. He recently collaborated with David Lynch on a short film for Dom Perignon (2012). Modern Painter, Vogue Magazine, GQ Style, and V Magazine have also published Gilford's photographs. He received his BA from the University of California, Los Angeles (2008). Mr. Gilford lives and works in Los Angeles.

Masood Kamandy (USA, b. 1981) received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts (2004) and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (2012). His work in video and photography investigates the medium of photography. He participated in dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel, Germany and Kabul, Afghanistan (2012). His photographs are in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Mr. Kamandy lives and works in Los Angeles.

Mie Hørlyck Mogensen (Denmark, b. 1979) is a sculptor and video artist who explores the interaction between body and object. Her work was recently exhibited in Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling 13, Copenhagen, Denmark (2013) and 13 for 13: The Portland State University and SFAI MFA Exchange Exhibition, San Francisco, CA (2012). She received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2013) and her MA from Roskilde University, Denmark (2007). Ms. Mogensen lives and works in San Francisco

Max Rain (USA, b. 1983) received his BFA from San Jose State University (2007) and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (2007). His drawings and ceramics explore the daily life of Los Angeles, using the material presence of the city to platform its tableaus. He is a recipient of the Elizabeth Heller Mandell Award (2010) and the Smith FWS Award (2009). He recently had a solo exhibition Drawings of Dublin, Thirty Three Anecdotes, The Market Studios, Dublin, Ireland (2012). Mr. Rain lives and works in Los Angeles.

 

Kim Schoen (USA, b. 1969) uses photographs and video installations to explore the rhetorics of display and the malleability of speech. She was recently included in Stupidious, South London Gallery, London (2014). Schoen is a co-founder and editor of MATERIAL, a journal of texts by visual artists. She received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA (2005) and her MPhil in Photography from The Royal College of Art in London (2008). Ms. Schoen lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
