Diane Rosenstein Gallery presents a selection of artists from The Creator Has A Master Plan, opening at the gallery on Friday, October 30th. This thematic installation — inspired by Pharaoh Sanders’ epic spiritual jazz recording from his 1969 album Karma — includes artists who engage the mystical energy and power of the natural and often supernatural world.
The gallery exhibition will feature work by Charles Fine, Daniel Gibson, Birdie Hall, David Hicks, Farrah Karapetian, Jay Kvapil, Sean McGaughey, Sarah Mikenis, Vanessa Prager, Joe Ray, Roland Reiss, Liza Ryan, Gail Stoicheff, Matthew Sweesy, Ilona Szwarc and Brian Wills.
Ilona Szwarc (Poland, b. 1984) takes inspiration from stage make-up tutorials, playing with the surfaces that we construct to produce and affirm our identity. By dismantling these false constructs and by taking apart the language of identification, she gives birth to hybrid identities and turns to fantasy to understand what it takes to shape a self, with all the mouldings, omissions, transformations, and stylizations involved. She received her MFA in Photography from Yale University and her BFA from the School of Visual Arts. Sean McGaughey’s (USA, b. 1974) paintings and works on paper pull from the vast history of image culture. He is a graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Matthew Sweesy (USA, b. 1974) is an artist who works primarily with painting and drawing. He cites Louise Bourgeois and the poems and writings of Wallace Stevens as influences on his outlook and practice. He lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
Jay Kvapil (USA, b. 1951) is a California-based potter who makes abstract ceramics with complex glazes that allude to the landscape and intimate pictorial space. He will show new ceramics created in his studio at Cal State Long Beach. Vanessa Prager (USA, b. 1984) is known for her abstract oil paintings in which perception, perspective and information flow are central themes. She will have a solo exhibition in Jan 2021; and lives and works in Glendale, CA. Gail Stoicheff (USA, b. 1976) explores figures found in Hellenic mythology. She works towards a mysterious, psychological and symbolic presentation that celebrates the Dionysian qualities ascribed to women throughout history and that still permeate current ideology. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. David Hicks (USA, b. 1977) is a ceramicist living and working in the San Joaquin Valley of California. His work is centered on a constant reflection in the forms native to the landscape that surround his Central California home.
