Jay Kvapil
JAY KVAPIL (USA, b. 1951) graduated from University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA in 1973, and between 1974 and 1975 studied tea ceremony ware at the Takatori Seizan Pottery in the island of Kyushu in Southern Japan. After returning to the United States, he obtained his MA (1979) and MFA (1981) from San Jose State University, California. Kvapil taught at the University of Hawaii (1984), then moved to California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) in 1986, where he served a variety of roles, including Professor of Art (Ceramics), Director of the School of Art and Interim Dean of the College of the Arts. Recently, he was Dean of the Mike Curb College of Art, Media, and Communications at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) from 2014-2015.
Jay Kvapil's pottery has been shown in solo exhibitions at Galerie Lefebrvre & Fils, Paris, France (2017), Couturier Gallery, Los Angeles (2013) as well as notable group shows including American Porcelain, New Dimensions in Ancient Art, The Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC (1980); On and Off the Wall: Shaped and Colored, Oakland Museum of California (OMCA),CA (1985); The Scripps College Invitational; Pacific Currents: Ceramics ’82, San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA (1982), International Ceramic Invitational, Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), Taiwan (1985). Jay Kvapil lives and works in Long Beach, California. The artist is also represented by Galerie Lefebvre & Fils in Paris, France and Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami, Florida.
